Blazing Fast 5G is Here
AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile will be rolling out its 5G network later this year. Major cities like Dallas, Los Angeles, and New York will experience high-speed Internet first, but fret not, other cities are promised to follow suit. How does 5G impact us today? As of now… not much. Eventually, smartphones compatible with the 5G network will allow connection speeds up to 500 megabytes per second. Imagine downloading 200 songs within a second off of Spotify, that’s how fast this is! Unfortunately, the market doesn’t sell 5G compatible phones yet, so we’ll just have to make do with 4G LTE’s comparably snail pace of 12MB/s. (Source: TechCrunch)
INTELligent Smart Glasses
Intel has been developing Vaunt, smart glasses that finally look… well, like glasses. Vaunt uses retinal projection technology which admits low powered laser rays into your eyes. Talk about a reverse Cyclops. While wearing Vaunt, users will gain access to a stream of information based on their surrounding view. These peripherals may contain information like restaurant ratings, names of acquaintances, and other details based on developers. Soon, we may live in a world where face to face connections are filtered through software. Feels like Google Glasses all over again. (Source: The Verge)
Amazon Acquires Home Security
Amazon has reportedly agreed to acquire smart-home company Ring for $1 Billion. Ring is best known for its connected doorbells, security cameras, and floodlights; products all aimed towards home and neighborhood security. Even with the acquisition, we can expect Ring to continue to operate under its own brand just like Whole Foods and Audible have been doing. Amazon’s progressive entry in the smart-home market may be a power play to securing a monopoly in the Internet of things. Next thing you know, we may be shouting “hey Alexa!” to our doorbells.
