The Dark Web Rises
GoDaddy banned the Neo-Nazi site called The Daily Stormer after it publicly celebrated the murder of Heather Heyer, a protester in this week’s white supremacist rally in Charlottesville. The site briefly moved to a Google domain until it was also kicked off due to terms-of-service violations. Even Facebook has taken action by deleting links to The Daily Stormer. Now the Neo-Nazi site rests on the dark web and an existing alt-right site. (Source: The Verge)
Make America Watch Movies Again
Mitch Lowe, co-founder of Netflix, plans to drop MoviePass subscriptions to just $9.95 per month. For just under 10 dollars, customers can watch one showing every day at any theater in the U.S., excluding 3D or IMAX screens. MoviePass hopes to solve the country’s declining theatre attendance and collect a large pool of data on viewing behaviors. Lowe believes high ticket prices, not streaming services, are theatres’ biggest disadvantage. “People really do want to go more often,” Lowe said. “They just don’t like the transaction.” A gym subscription but for movies? I’m in! (Source: Bloomberg Tech)
Allo Motto
Google’s consumer-facing chat app, Allo, is here. The service allows users to integrate Google Assistant and “smart replies” when chatting with contacts. Although Allo currently only works with Android devices, it will soon be supported by iPhones. Allo was first introduced at last year’s Google I/O developer conference, and has since been downloaded over 10 million times. The number of active users, however, is in the dark. Hopefully this isn’t Pied Piper all over again. (Source: TechCrunch)
