It’s great to start to think about what is a managed service? Because almost anything you can imagine can be part of a managed service, IT managed service for infrastructures, like caring and feeding networks, wishes, switches, and traffic security.
But, what does it mean to be a managed service for an application? A managed service for an application is all about adopting best practices. It’s like getting a roadmap, a strategy, covering all your skills that you need to operate successfully. Because when you invest, whether it’s a new implementation or whether it’s an upgrade, the idea is that I want this investment to pay off, provide me more functionality.
How do I do that of keeping the need on top of the application using the application? And in other ways, there’s new functionality coming out. How do I find out about that?
Managed services also cross over into add-ons. So it’s not just the application that you’re using as an ERP. It would be anything connected to that ERP. Your managed service might not be an expert in that piece. But they would facilitate like talking about other problems that couldn’t be solved within your application managed services provider.
The Two Sides Of Application Managed Services:
The application managed services have two sides – Proactive Services & Reactive Services.
First, let us talk about the latter. This is classically what we think about in support. For example, Incident Management – It’s reactive. I’m stuck. How do I do this? How fast will my issue get fixed? What about some service response times or SLA service level agreements. What if my integration is broken.
These are reactive services that are all included while feeding your applications.
On the proactive side, we’re taking a strategic head view and looking forward—such things as release or change management. Change management might involve new customizations, new functionality.
The other piece of proactive service is the governance or the operation all agreement. When you enter into application managed services, you’re making agreements with the provider of what services you want. So your system has a lot of bases to cover. Do you want some of those bases covered? Do you want all those bases to protect what you know? What does it look like? More complicated.
Also, within the application side, we do get into a bit of system administration and performance. It’s unavoidable as applications run slow. How do we go about that? This can be attributed to code or customizations or the way you have integrations set up.
In a performance problem, we start with the application. We see what the application is. Often, the resolution is in the application, and it’s not necessarily in your hardware or infrastructure but Cloud. So we do address that in an application.
