Treat Yo Self 2017
This past Saturday, 11/11, marked one of the biggest holidays for Chinese online retailers: Singles’ Day. The holiday is for those that buy chocolate-covered strawberries for themselves on Valentine’s Day and gives everyone the excuse they need to splurge. Alibaba, which draws most of the attention for Singles’ Day, racked up nearly $18 billion by noon, earning $7 billion in just the first half hour of the day. Who needs a significant other when you can just buy whatever you want with a click of a button? #treatyoself (Source: TechCrunch)
Gates Invests Millions to Find Alzheimer’s Cure
Alzheimer’s affects 47 million people across the world, but Bill Gates believes there is a solution. “Any type of treatment would be a huge advance from where we are today,” he said, “but the long-term goal has got to be [a] cure.” Gates is investing $50 million of his own personal finances into the Dementia Discovery Fund. This research partnership focuses on innovative ideas, such as looking at the immune system of a brain cell. This marks the first time Gates has committed to a noncommunicable disease. Anheuser-Busch Brews Up Plan to Save Sales
Anheuser-Busch switched up their U.S. leadership following slipping sales in Bud Light and Budweiser. On January 1, Anheuser-Busch Chief Sales Officer, Michel Doukeris, will replace João Castro Neves to run the U.S. subsidiary. A-B InBev is the largest brewery in the country but still faces challenges as Americans shift from domestic beer to craft beer and wine. Hopefully a new U.S. head (pun intended) with a strong marketing background can get the company to recover quickly from their hangover. (Source: Wall Street Journal)
