Millennials: Are They Using Technology Properly?
Millennials are the generation everyone is talking about right now. Some blame them for being distant, eccentric and immature while others say that they are the best generation to come. Who is right? No matter what you might think, there are always going to be two sides of the coin, the good and the bad, the yin and the yang.
There are a lot of stereotypes surrounding millennials, and although some might be even justified, there are a lot of exaggerations as well. Still, there are things that most millennials share — gadgets (i.e. technology). This is the first generation that started relying on technology on a daily basis.
At the same time, this is one of the most common traits of millennials, their addiction to these gadgets, and while some say that it’s good to be tech-savvy, others say that they are contributing to nothing and just wasting time. Like always, the truth is somewhere in between. Still, this obsession with technology has brought millennials many good things that previous generations could only wish for.
They will dismiss things they don’t like, but worship the ones they do
A common stereotypical trait of millennials is their lack of patience. For example, millennials usually don’t want to spend a lot of time figuring out how a certain device or app works.
The tech industry works to make everything simple and available. Today, people are likely to look for another solution instead of taking the time to figure out how to use something.
At the same time, if a millennial enjoys using a device or an app, he or she will rely on it so much that they will become so good at it and learn all of the ins and outs. This means that they will be able to take these skills and use it in the business world. In some cases, millennials will find a way to use technology in a different light than what the product was originally created for.
They are addicted to design
A great design isn’t just about a device being visually pleasing. A modern design includes quality and aesthetics, and these things determine how good a product is overall. Millennials are depending on technology daily, to communicate with others, organize themselves, and get their everyday tasks finished.
Good design allows users to streamline, clarify, and simplify complex actions and this is what all millennials like. Simply put, they want gadgets that are simple, work fast, and offer no complications whatsoever. Millennials don’t want gadgets that offer an “ok” experience to them.
They want to do things flawlessly and with ease. In this case, if the design suits the user, he or she will probably use it really well and explore all of the options and functionalities. On the other hand, if not, chances are that the person will simply get rid of it or be unwilling to understand the concept behind that design.
Millennials know what they want
Millennials are very different than previous generations if you look at them as consumers. This is because they know exactly what they want and they are not afraid to ask for it. On top of that, they will not get something if they don’t like it. Millennials are very informed and they keep up with tech advancements.
No matter if we are talking about a new iPhone or Android, they will learn all the features and get as much information on new devices that come out before they buy them. In some cases, this means that a person will use all of the features and functionalities possible.
Millennials are curious
Despite what anyone says about millennials when it comes to smartphones, tablets and laptops they are very curious.
Of course, as said before, there are those who will not try and push technology to the limits and use it in a new light.
Still, when you look at older generations, you will realize that even those uninterested millennials generally know more and want to learn more about technology. They simply love technology and feel that their gadgets are a vital part of their lives.
Millennials are changing the workplace
Given the fact that millennials are people born between the 1980s to 2000s, today they are the young workforce that is getting jobs in great numbers and they will be the ones to shape the workplace in the years to come. Millennials are powerful workers who, if motivated, can do wonders on their jobs.
This is the first tech-savvy generation; all millennials know how to use gadgets at a much higher level than any baby boomer or generation X member. Their use of technology is something that really sets millennials apart from other generations. This means that, in most cases, millennials who are new to their work are better at handling digital technologies and assignments than their senior coworkers.
Millennials are already making big changes in business, as a lot of companies are looking to invest in their IT infrastructure and switch a lot of their business processes to be operated digitally. This wouldn’t be possible with so many people entering the workforce who have a lot of knowledge in using modern tech gadgets. Their will to learn and be creative is also what makes them special, great assets in the workplace.
Millennials are a bit spoiled, but on the other hand, they cherish their individuality and they want to personalize their gadgets as much as possible. Their gadgets are important to them and they reflect on who they are as people. Still, nobody can deny that they are a unique generation that has the potential to achieve many great things.
