2017 has been an exciting year. From the rise of Bitcoin to the introduction of the iPhone X, we have been blessed with constant action. Today, we present our top 5 tech stories of 2017.
Amazon the Giant
Amazon is taking strides towards total market domination. Having acquired Whole Foods, taking over the voice shopping industry with their Amazon Echo, and now voyaging in the health industry by considering pharmaceuticals, Amazon is proving it can do it all. An estimated 42% of U.S. online sales were through Amazon this year. In addition, Amazon holds the top Cloud storage market at 52%, comparatively to 21% Microsoft and 18% Google.
The Thousand Dollar Phone
Apple released the iPhone X this November, the flagship iPhone of 2017. At a staggering starting price of $1,000, this is the most expensive iPhone to date. It removed old features like the home button and introduced FaceID. Even with the steep price point, it didn’t deter Apple fanatics from acquiring Apple’s latest piece of tech.
Bitcoin Booming
Bitcoin rose to fame with an unprecedented gain of 1700% valuation in 2017. In just a few months, the 9-year stateless cryptocurrency has only been going up. Whether or not Bitcoin’s bubble is about pop, we can safely say that cryptocurrency will be a key disruptor in 2018.
Nothing is Safe Online
1) Equifax had 145.5 million personal data hacked from their servers, roughly half of the United States’ population.
2) Uber revealed a year-old breach, which resulted in stolen information from 57 million customers and drivers. Instead of being transparent, Uber paid off the hackers $100,000 with their promise to delete the data and sealed lips.
3) Yahoo clarified that 3 billion users have been hacked through their services and still do not know who the perpetrator is.
Disney Worries About Netflix
With Netflix taking over a larger portion of TV/movie viewership, many companies are worried. Disney is one of them. Disney bought 52.4 billion dollars’ worth of stock from 21st Century Fox. Disney’s portfolio now includes large brands such as Star Wars and The Simpsons. Many other companies are also looking to join the competition.
