The Largest Cyberattack in History
Friday afternoon Microsoft Windows computers around the world were under attack. The ransomware, called WannaCry, locks users out of their files and asks the administrator to pay to access them. WannaCry exploits weaknesses in a version of Windows that Microsoft previously released a security patch for last March. With 200,000 computers infected, the ransomware has made about $32,000 off users and businesses. The attackers have yet to be identified and many firms are fearful of attacks continuing. In response to one of Donald Trump’s tweets, CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, has invited the president to respond to submitted questions via Twitter, providing a perfect record and a wider reach to those without televisions. If we live in a culture that already receives most of its news through social media, is this the next logical move for politics? It certainly wouldn’t hurt Twitter’s synching (pun) stock.
