This: here seems to be typos on page 21, para 3. The sentence reads, “Other companies and publishers pay search experts to help get high in the rankings want because they more traffic.”
Should be: Other companies and publishers pay search engine optimization (SEO) experts to help them rank high in the search results for Google, Yahoo, Bing because they want more traffic to their respective site(s).
I hope this helps! Thanks for letting me know too!

I love Socialnomics and would like to shamelessly ask for a favor.
I have a job interview coming up where I need to discuss “The Business Value of Social Computing”. It would be fantastic if you can craft a pithy one or two line soundbite on your perspective, that I can drop during my interview. Your contribution could just be enough to tip things my way…
All being well, your small contribution to my fabulous interview will result in a shiny new job for me! And, er, a warm glow of benevolence for you
Anyway, I realise that this is a bit off the wall and a bit cheeky, but what the heck… I really appreciate your time reading this far, and look forward to hearing your response. Cheers. Luke
But I watched your video and I cried. When something is true, and accurate, and profound, and paradigm shifting and expresses what I try to get across to clients every day, it makes me so happy that I just have to cry.
Erik, Amazing Work ! Your video presentation is nothing short of brilliant. I will be promoting your book and am asking permission to post your video on a couple of my sites. I knew about your book but this is the first time I watched your video.
I’m half way through your book and I thinks it’s wonderful! I’ve recently started a company in the social media field, and was wondering if i could use the socialnomics video (short version) for my website?
I’ve worked in marketing for over 14 years now so you could probably say I’m a veteran by now However the world around us is changing so fast I still feel sometimes as if it’s day number 1 for me! Thanks for all your inspiration – I saw your Is Social Media a Fad? during a CIM course presentation. It’s a great eye opener!
I had to pick 2 books to read for a Masters class and write a Point of View what the two books impacted on my learning. The first is “Why we Buy” and the second one is your “socialnomics.” I’m an Advertising Major and I just want to shout out and say that I am so glad to read your book! The design of your book is so easy for me to read, and one of the best I’ve encountered so far. I like your key points after every chapter. (Probably a good format that all other books should follow) Otherwise everyone is going to go on a summary website like spark notes.
I just finished reading the part about A Truly Interconnected Web? in your book and want to share with you something that happened to me 2 weeks ago.
I met a new friend in class and as we both try to search for one another on facebook to add and become friends our profile did not show up. We try searching each other on our mutual friends and that didn’t work as well) We both did not block one another because we both have never met before. In the end after 5-10 minutes of searching over and over, we Googled one another our names and with the link provided we were able to add one another.
Not too sure how unlucky we are, but just wondered if you heard something like this before.
But other than that I really like your videos!
You inspire me!
We videotaped a social netoworking presentation and our tech guy uses your video up front. Is it okay to use it in its entirety in our videotaped presentation? We’ll give you credit.
Hi Eric,
I work for a brand experience agency and clients constantly ask me to provide ROI metrics on Social similar to ROI for CPC & CPL programs. I have yet to find any. One client wants to drive 1M page views to their site via social- How would you respond to such a request?
I am an account exec at an ad agency and I want to attend a conference so we can incorporate social media as part of client marketing strategies. Could you recommend one that you think is best? I was thinking the New Comm Forum since it seems diverse and targets ad professionals. If you wouldn’t mind taking a minute to share your thoughts, it would be greatly appreciated!

David Meerman Scott is great and a good guy. I’m flattered to be mentioned in the same sentence. Thanks for reading my book Socialnomics and I’m glad you are enjoying it.
Hopefully like others it helps with your business. You travel Website looks great btw. Having helped head up Travelzoo’s marketing in the past I believe you are on a road to success.
I am adapting your motto – “Fast fast, fail forward, fail better.” Thanks for the compliments on the site design – I’m coming off of 10 years as a web site designer and nows it’s my turn to build my own web-based company via travel. It was also great to read some travel industry specifics in the book.
I also agree with your advice to launch in Beta. I started a blog, Facebook page, etc. and had no idea what to do with these tools but decided to get started anyhow back in 2009 and figure it out as I go – just like I did in ’99 with web site design.
With yours and David’s books – and everyone else your recommend, I’m now ready to start implementing changes for Bright Life Travel – version 2.0. I’ll keep you posted on progress.
I’m in an E-Myth business coaching group and have posted these books and the importance of social media to my fellow members with the overview text right from Socialnomics inside flap as you say it perfectly!

I am going to start doing research in “social media” with a professor at my university. I just order the “socialnomics” book, i was wondering if you could point in the right direction to get my research going!
Hi Erik,
I bought your book over the holidays in Switzerland. Look forward to get great insights from it. To start with I have posted your video on to my blog.
However – if that is not the case please let me know and I will speak with my publisher. If you have an eReader you can also download the eBook (Kindle, Sony eReader, Nook, etc.)
my name is catarina and i would like to know, do you think that the development of web 2.0 will lead to a drastic change on the way people get informed these days?
Great question: “do you think that the development of web 2.0 will lead to a drastic change on the way people get informed these days?”
I believe YES! A fun example is that we during 2008 election for the Tina Fey spoofs of Sarah Palin, more people viewed the 5 minute video clip online than via TV. So, instead of having to sit through 90 minutes of SNL, you can wait to have your friends/peers push you the content that it relevant/best.
my name is manuel, i’m a student of journalism, and i have a question for you. can you tell me please, how do you think the media is reacting to web 2.0?
Manuel: Great question, the short answer is that some companies are embracing it (think CNN with their on demand video, podcasts, use of Twitter, etc.). While others are taking a stance of FEAR (False Evidence Appearing Real) – think about Cable providers. They are fighting the fact that everything may one day be served through an IP address rather than embracing the massive benefits (tracking, ease of international distribution, cost reduction etc.)
My name is Catarina, I am 18 years old, and I am from Portugal. I just started university and we have a subject called journalism. Right now, we have to do a paper work about the effects that web 2.0 is having on the traditional media, such as newspapers, radio, and tv. I would really like to get your opinion on this, like how do you think traditional media are dealing with web 2.0? how are they reacting, are they adapting themselves? I would be so honoured if you could help me clarify these points…
Thank you so much for the time dispended! I am really looking forward for an answer,
I would like to request a copy of your book, Socialnomics and an interview with you on my upcoming New Media Radio Hour program. My name is Rey Ybarra and I interview many best selling authors. How can I get you on my show?
My college professor showed our class this video today, and ever since, I have just been thinking about this and how interesting of a topic it is. I went out and bought the book, and it is the first book i have bought in well over 2 years other than for school.
I am even debating changing my Major to somehow incorporate this idea, but I am still trying to figure out how I could do that.
Thank you for bringing up this AMAZING and INTRIGUING topic.
Your video posted on YouTube is awesome! Have you heard of Blastoff yet? BlastOff is an internet Launch Pad that brings media, news, social networking, games, music and shopping together all on one site!
But that is not the best part… the best part is the money to be made being a part of it.
Wach the video on http://www.seeblastoffnow.com and see what you think for yourself and then get back to me 301.704.6933 —
Hope your day is great!

Your info is great. I have been sending all my group to your video in order to get ready for our Viral Live Public Launch on 10/26/2009! Thanks for the interest! My publisher is working on a distribution deal in Argentina. Right now though I believe Amazon will priority ship for $6.99. There is also a Kindle version. I hope this helps and thanks again.
I would like to use Social Media Revolution, (the 2:30 version) posted on You Tube, at a presentation of lawyers on October 15 in San Diego–whom do I need to contact for copyright permission?
May I use a few (5) of your quotes from your presentation? I am doing a presentation. I will give you full credit. and I will also post the entire video onto my blog.
The video got me to get involved with facebook (That’s been fun!). I ordered the book off of Amazon the same day.
I really wondered how you would be able to make the book interesting and hold my attention after I’d figured you’d already said all you could say in the video…The book is great, though. Great writing style and content.
Very succint video. It’s like a snapshot of an ever transforming phenomenon. It would be interesting to revisit this information every year for an update, always with the same presentation format. Others had commented on the time different media had taken to reach 50 million individuals but none had succeeded in making it so clear.
Archeologists of the web take notice: this is a nice DIGG!
Loved your book. Received a promotional copy in the mail. We’d love to have you join us as a guest on Comet Branding Internet Radio http://cometbranding.com/blog/category/radio/
if your schedule would allow, in the next month or so. Look forward to hearing from you.
Erik, this is how we’re utilizing social media. In addition to our FB fan page, I’m using Twitter to create a viral campaign and connect with customers.
For example, I replied to a customer at one of our restaurants and then the following happened.
Have to give you credit on this – I had never heard of Socialnomics until my friend forwarded a link to your video. Your social networking tactic hooked me – I’m on Amazon now… kudos!
BTW… I’m forwarding your vid on to my coworkers… it is absolutely CRITICAL in our business to not fall behind in social networking. I’m looking forward to the read.
Tyler: Thanks for the feedback. It’s ironic that I’m using social media to help sell Socialnomics which is a book about how critical social media is for individuals and businesses. Glad you liked the video and hopefully you like the book.
I’mwondering if the video might be used as part of a conference presentation. Do you have an original video file you can send me as it’s flaky to trust Internet connections at conferences. This was a nicely produced video! Good luck on your book.
Sincerely,
Peggy Miles
Washington, DC
google me for more info.
Great video – I may also use it to start a presentation. Can you tell me the source for the 80% companies use Linkedin as their primary Recruiting tool please? I want to quote it in an article but I know I will need to prove its genuine.
Thanks
Mark: I’m glad you liked the video! All the source data is in the book Socialnomics which came out 2 weeks ago. I’ve also posted the data below the blog post here:
For that specific stat I believe it has subsequently been updated to 95%, but please doublecheck. Also it should be “as a” instead of as “their” primary tool. We are working to wordsmith in the video. I call this out in the notes as well! I hope this helps.
Is there anyway to download the video so I can show it as part of a larger presentation on social media at an HR conference in Bratislava? I would stream it, but the internet connection they are using is questionable. I’d of course give full credit and make no alterations. Thanks for your help. Look forward to reading the book!
Down here in little old New Zealand we are trying to take advantage of this paradigm shift. We are starting a new type of social network which does many of the things mentioned above, plus a few extras. If you have time, take a look at the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51Z90mGYj1s
Social Media is Not a Fad. It’s a helluva weird coincidence.
So imagine my surprise upon watching your video to realize that the author was the captain of my high school tennis team.
Great work Erik. Glad to see you are doing well, and I’ll pick up my copy of the book today.
Let me know if you are traveling to Seattle anytime soon. Looks like we have some catching up to do, and we still share some common interests (check out the fledgling blog if you get a chance). Although I haven’t picked up a raquet in years.
A very small world! I will let you know if I’m in Seattle and do the same if you are in Boston, we will have to get the tennis racquets out for old times…
Thanks for sending the note. Are you Jeff DeHaven? If not thanks for the lookout.
If you are Jeff, please either keep the original ending to the video and add your slate at the end or put a slate before your promotional end slate stating produced by Erik Qualman author of Socialnomics.
Erik, great video and blog. Just saw book at Barnes & Noble today. Please add me to your mailing and email list. I plan to show your video and reference your book at a social networking group I participate in at Kaiser Permanente.
Your cat sounds smart & cool,
It must have gone to a very good school,
It’s true that I have jumped into the social media pool,
So that in the future I don’t look like a fool,
A few may believe the video to be marketing pollution,
227,000 others realize it’s a social media revolution!
Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and comment, have a good weekend. Best – equalman

Go for it! If you can just make sure it’s a direct translation without cuts/edits that would be wonderful. Thanks for the interest and for asking me. My wife speaks French and Spanish so she will be excited.

Can you please clarify?

Dear Erik,
I am a German student. In the course of writing my bachelor thesis on Social Media I read your book and I think it is amazing!
I would appreciate it if you would write me your opinion on two topics so I can use it as an expert statement in my thesis.
1) What do you think which trend follows Social Media? Do you think there is a “Social Media Bubble” that will burst?
2) What are the biggest flaws of Social Media as a marketing instrument for companies?
Thank you in advance, I am looking forward to read your answer!

catarina // December 17, 2009 at 10:04 am |
hi mr. erik,
my name is catarina and i would like to know, do you think that the development of web 2.0 will lead to a drastic change on the way people get informed these days?
equalman // December 18, 2009 at 2:40 pm |
Catarina:
Great question: “do you think that the development of web 2.0 will lead to a drastic change on the way people get informed these days?”
I believe YES! A fun example is that we during 2008 election for the Tina Fey spoofs of Sarah Palin, more people viewed the 5 minute video clip online than via TV. So, instead of having to sit through 90 minutes of SNL, you can wait to have your friends/peers push you the content that it relevant/best.
Happy Holidays!
manuel // December 16, 2009 at 4:00 pm |
hi mr. erik,
my name is manuel, i’m a student of journalism, and i have a question for you. can you tell me please, how do you think the media is reacting to web 2.0?
equalman // December 16, 2009 at 4:17 pm |
Manuel: Great question, the short answer is that some companies are embracing it (think CNN with their on demand video, podcasts, use of Twitter, etc.). While others are taking a stance of FEAR (False Evidence Appearing Real) – think about Cable providers. They are fighting the fact that everything may one day be served through an IP address rather than embracing the massive benefits (tracking, ease of international distribution, cost reduction etc.)

Dear Mr Erik,
I just sent you an email to your gmail adress. I am very glad, you’re going to be able to help me.
Thank you again,

Catarina Jales // December 14, 2009 at 2:57 pm |
Dear Mr.Erik,
My name is Catarina, I am 18 years old, and I am from Portugal.
I am really looking forward for an answer,
Catarina Jales

Hi Erik:
I just want to say Hello. I started translating your book into GERMAN. It will be published by MITP (www.mitp.de) at the end of this year.
A message for German readers (für deutsche Leser): ‘Socialnomics’ wird wahrscheinlich noch in diesem Jahr auf Deutsch zur Verfügung stehen.

Its Free and Easy and because of social media it will explode just as your Youtube Video shows! Those who can understand that will be the elite in todays business world. visitblastoffnow.com

The video got me to get involved with facebook (That’s been fun!). I ordered the book off of Amazon the same day.
I really wondered how you would be able to make the book interesting and hold my attention after I’d figured you’d already said all you could say in the video…The book is great, though. Great writing style and content.
Thanks for sharing your insights,
Paul

François Reeves // September 19, 2009 at 1:45 pm |
Very succint video. It’s like a snapshot of an ever transforming phenomenon. It would be interesting to revisit this information every year for an update, always with the same presentation format. Others had commented on the time different media had taken to reach 50 million individuals but none had succeeded in making it so clear.
Archeologists of the web take notice: this is a nice DIGG!
equalman // September 21, 2009 at 2:44 pm |
Thanks Reeves! This space is moving so fast that a year from now it will be amazing the difference in the video!

Can we speak about a possible speaking engagement for my team on Sept 21 or 22 in NYC? Thanks
Young Kim // September 5, 2009 at 12:20 am |
Erik, this is how we’re utilizing social media. In addition to our FB fan page, I’m using Twitter to create a viral campaign and connect with customers.
For example, I replied to a customer at one of our restaurants and then the following happened.
http://tdhurst.com/kabuki/
Never imagined or even hoped that she would send her story along to a blogger.
Kim // September 4, 2009 at 2:44 pm |
How can I actually download a copy of the Social Media Revolution video??? Is there a way to do this other than just viewing in Youtube?
Much thanks!!!

I’m looking forward to the read.
equalman // September 4, 2009 at 2:58 am |
Tyler: Thanks for the feedback. It’s ironic that I’m using social media to help sell Socialnomics which is a book about how critical social media is for individuals and businesses. Glad you liked the video and hopefully you like the book.

Great video – I may also use it to start a presentation. Can you tell me the source for the 80% companies use Linkedin as their primary Recruiting tool please? I want to quote it in an article but I know I will need to prove its genuine.
Thanks
equalman // August 27, 2009 at 5:39 pm |
Mark: I’m glad you liked the video! All the source data is in the book Socialnomics which came out 2 weeks ago. I’ve also posted the data below the blog post here:
http://socialnomics.net/2009/08/11/statistics-show-social-media-is-bigger-than-you-think/
For that specific stat I believe it has subsequently been updated to 95%, but please doublecheck. Also it should be “as a” instead of as “their” primary tool. We are working to wordsmith in the video. I call this out in the notes as well! I hope this helps.
David // August 26, 2009 at 10:22 am |

If you are Jeff, please either keep the original ending to the video and add your slate at the end or put a slate before your promotional end slate stating produced by Erik Qualman author of Socialnomics.
Thanks!!

Your cat sounds smart & cool,
It must have gone to a very good school,
It’s true that I have jumped into the social media pool,
